Here's a nice victory I thought I'd let everyone know
about--it's only a step on the road of course, but it
feels really good to finally have tangible results.
Last Monday night, the Charlottesville City Council
approved a Living Wage ordinance that applies to City
contractors, requiring a living wage of at least $8.00
to be paid on all city work. The Ordinance includes an
annual review for cost of living increases, and
Council struck down a two year sunset provision. The
final vote was 4-1.
Here in Charlottesville we are continuing our campaign
in the private sector, in which we are focused on the
Hotel industry. We are also looking now at shifting
focus to contractors at the University of
Virginia--something that has been lacking, and that as
a student I'm very excited about.
Keep up the good work everyone!! Sometimes we loose
focus, but moments like Monday night make it all worth
while.
Solidarity,
Nicholas Graber-Grace

"Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, who has been turning his employees over to the government relief rolls in order to preserve his company's undistributed reserves, tell you--using his stockholders'money to pay postage for his personal opinions--that a wage of $11 a week is going to have a
disastrous effect on all American industry."
