This is a message from the International Solidarity Committee (ISC)
regarding getting better connected with campus chapters and recruiting
bottomliners for the committee. Please take the few minutes to look thru
this..
(A) ISC-USAS LIASONS WANTED ON CAMPUS CHAPTERS
There has often been a sentiment that the International Work of USAS is not
connected enough to folks on the campus chapters -- that not everyone knows
what is going on in the International Solidarity Committee.
In order to bridge this disconnect the ISC would like to propose the idea of
a wide array of campus chapters to designate ISC liasons.
This will enable the campus chapter to know what the ISC is doing, the fact
that it exists and how they can get involved.
The main way ISC liason can start going is to:
1) Get on the ISC list-serv: USASInternationalSolidarity@yahoogroups.com
by emailing USASInternationalSolidarity-subscribe@yahoogroups.com with
"subscribe" in the subject heading AND 2) To get in touch with the office
at 202-NO-SWEAT or email
bhumika620@yahoo.com
(B) BOTTOMLINERS WANTED FOR ISC
- There are 8 bottomliners currently being recruited for the ISC:
1) CARI Coordinator, 2) Delegations/Tours/Exchanges, 3) Finances, 4)
Website, 5) Translation of materials, 6) Maintaining and making
International Contacts, 7) Research and Materials Production, and 8)
USAS-ISC Liason (Communicating about ISC work to USAS as a whole)
- These bottomliner positions are not about doing all that work by yourself;
it is about overseeing the process of it.
We want folks to talk about the ISC-CAMPUS LIASON and the BOTTOMLINER
POSITIONS to their campus groups, and see if anybody is interested in either
of these two.
And if folks in your group ask you, well, what exactly does the ISC do.. you
can print out the description below and hand it out/read it
out to them:
***SO, WHAT DOES THE International Solidarity Committee REALLY DO?***
The International Solidarity Committee is a working group of the United
Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) dedicated to communicating and acting in
solidarity with workers around the world.
The ISC seeks to establish and maintain communication with workers and
allies around the world.
The ISC actively seeks, receives, and distributes requests for international
solidarity, often suggesting tactics and actions to USAS, and offering
itself as a vehicle for student-worker communication.
The ISC works, in general, to inform USAS and direct its course regarding
international solidarity.
Traditionally the ISC, like USAS, places primary importance on the needs and
well-being of workers in its decisions and tactics.
The ISC has been a part of a number of worker victories including the recent
establishment of SITEMEX at the factory formerly known as Kukdong in Mexico.
But the real potential of the ISC, let alone USAS, has yet to be fulfilled,
and many requests for solidarity go unanswered or unheard.
We are seeking to increase the awareness about ISC's existence and work
among campuses. Thus, we implore and encourage you or someone from your
chapter/organization to join this committee and become involved in the inner
workings of international solidarity within USAS.
