WITNESS and Oxygen are pleased to invite you to the launch screening and
Q&A session for the documentary 'Behind the Labels: Garment Workers on U.S.
Saipan', produced by two-time Emmy-nominee, Tia Lessin and narrated by
Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon. The screening will take place
on November 15, from 7:00 ? 8:30 pm at Visions Cinema (1927 Florida Avenue,
NW, Washington, D.C., 202-667-0090). Tickets are $6 for the film and
accompanying Q&A.
Powerful hidden camera footage, along with garment workers' personal
stories, offers a rare and unforgettable glimpse into indentured labor on
the pacific island of Saipan - the only U.S. territory exempt from minimum
wage and immigration laws. 'Behind the Labels' takes the story from the
factory floor to the streets, where protesters worldwide wage an ongoing
battle against globalization.
Along with the screening we will be hosting a Q&A, introduced by Cheryl
Mills, Senior VP, Oxygen and Gillian Caldwell, Executive Director, WITNESS,
that will include the following speakers: Chie Abad, Former Saipan Garment
Worker/Activist; Tia Lessin, Producer/Director, 'Behind the Labels'; Mark
Levinson, Director of Research for UNITE!; Elisa Massimino, D.C. Director
for the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights; Congressman George Miller
(invited) who re-introduced legislation on Saipan in this session
In conjunction with the launch of the show, WITNESS has prepared a Rights
Alert video feature at its website, www.witness.org, where you can preview
excerpts from the film, and learn how to take action.
In the follow-up to the screening we will be working with other
organizations campaigning against sweatshop abuses to support the video's
use in outreach, education and advocacy. If interested please contact Sam
Gregory at sam@witness.org. 'Behind the Labels' has also been picked up for
international distribution by FilmsTransit, one of the world's leading
documentary distributors. We are expecting additional broadcasts throughout
the year and throughout the world.
Unreserved tickets will be available at the door for $6. The screening will
begin promptly at 7:00 pm, so please try to arrive 15 minutes in advance. I
can be reached at sam@witness.org (212-274-1664 ext. 207).
Best Regards,
Sam Gregory, Program Coordinator, WITNESS, www.witness.org
