Hey USAS,
It's time for the next election of USAS representatives to the WRC governing
board!
Q: Groovy! Where's the application?
A: It's attached, and pasted below!
Q: How many spots are up for election?
A: Three. Lauren-Stephens Davidowitz, Daniel Long, and Marikah Mancini will
all be leaving the board. Suzanne Webb and Ginger Gentile will be staying on
until spring.
Q: When are the applications due?
A: Monday, November 19, 2001. Please send completed apps to
wrc-usasGB@yahoogroups.com.
Q: So what's the process here?
A: Basically: folks send in their applications by Monday, Nov. 19. The
current board reps and coordinating committee members will compile the
finalists based on the criteria listed below, and then send out the
applications over the USAS list. USAS groups on campus will have a week to
review the applications, and then each group will vote for three people in
the election between November 20 and 26.
Anyone can apply. Everyone should apply-- experience with the WRC is not a
requirement (though understanding of the WRC is). USAS is interested in
diversity in areas such as class, gender, LGBTQ, and race. Also, diversity
of region and school size are important.
Q: Who can I contact with questions?
A: Marakah Mancini at marakah@hotmail.com or Ginger Gentile at
gsg15@columbia.edu.
Thanks,
marakah
Application for USAS Representative to the WRC Governing Board
Please send completed applications to marakah@hotmail.com by Monday,
November 19.
1) What has been your past involvement with the Worker Rights Consortium?
2) If you were on the governing board, to whom would you be accountable?
What are some means of communication and accountability that you propose?
3) What do you hope to accomplish in the next year as a member of the
governing board? How will you play a role in helping the WRC reach these
goals? Are there any obstacles that you think you may encounter while
trying to achieve these goals? If so, how would you handle them?
4) How would you describe the WRC¹s relationship to universities? To
corporations?
5) Does your school do licensing, and what is the student body size of your
school?
6) How do you interact with groups or with administrations that have very
different viewpoints? In group decisions, how do you deal with views that
conflict with your own?
7) What do you see as the WRC¹s relationship to workers in producing
countries?
8) What skills can you contribute as a USAS WRC representative? (Also, do
you have skill in any other languages?)
9) What role do you think diversity plays when
working in solidarity with workers?
10) Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Applicants should possess:
1) A full understanding of the WRC and USAS
2) Maturity in dealing with people with different opinions
3) A willingness to devote a large amount of time to the position, to travel
to both WRC and USAS meetings/events, and to be accessible as a resource for
USAS
There are three spots open for elections this spring. Terms are one year
long. If an incumbent wishes to continue to serve on the governing board,
they must run again for re-election at the end of their year-long term.
Students intending to go abroad may apply, but it would be extremely
difficult to participate on the board while studying abroad. The remaining
two spots on the board will be up for election in the Spring, at the end of
their term.
The current USAS representatives to the WRC board will review applications
and choose finalists by considering the above criteria, as well as the need
for diversity in the areas of race. Other factors in selecting finalists
will be region and school size. USAS will then vote for its representatives
according to the same process by which it elected the current
representatives: applications will be sent out over the USAS e-mail list,
and USAS groups will have one week to review the applications. Each USAS
group will vote for its three choices for representatives. Elections
themselves are currently scheduled for Monday, April 30th. Further
information about the voting process itself will be sent out with the
completed applications.
Terms of the board officially begin in December.
