If there is one message the participants of yesterday^Rs peaceful rally
would
like to stress, it is that the issues that we are fighting for remain
unaddressed. The 10 housekeeping positions are still in danger of being
subcontracted, setting a precedent that would open the door for the
subcontracting of the remaining 440 positions.
Over the course of the past year, students and workers have come together to
identify consistent problems with Stanford^Rs labor practices-one of the
most
significant being subcontracting. To this end, there has been a
conscientious and dedicated movement on the part of numerous organizations
to address these issues.
Yesterday^Rs actions represent a decisive move to hold our university
accountable; we believe our non-violent action is justified. Student arrests
were a result of consistent negligent behavior on the part of the
administration, not of student desire to sensationalize the issue.
