FLA Leader Moves On
by Judy Sarasohn
After starting up an office for the Fair Labor Association with himself
and a cell phone two years ago, Sam Brown is leaving. While he's not
sure exactly what he'll be doing, Brown, executive director of FLA, says
he'll continue in the social-justice policy arena, possibly in something
dealing with the link between energy policy and national security.
FLA is a nonprofit group made up of consumer, human and labor rights
organizations as well as a number of major apparel and footwear
companies -- including Levi Strauss & Co., Liz Claiborne Inc., Nike
Inc., Reebok International Ltd., Eddie Bauer Inc. and Polo Ralph Lauren
Corp., among others -- and many colleges and universities. The group's
mission is to help protect the rights of workers in the United States
and worldwide.
Brown said now that FLA has been established, "it seemed like the right
time to move on." Earlier, he served as director of ACTION, with
responsibility for the Peace Corps, and as ambassador and head of the
U.S. delegation to the Organization on Security and Cooperation in
Europe.
FLA announced yesterday that Auret van Heerden, a prominent South
African activist during the apartheid period and director of monitoring
for FLA, was named interim executive director.
The group's board of directors is expected to take formal action on his
appointment next month.
