Hello USAS!
A quick update with some info from Derby...
On Friday night I talked with Jane Howald, President
of CWA Local 14177. Friday morning the union met
briefly with management and it looks like the union
and management will be deciding on some days to start
negotiations in the coming weeks. Although it is cool
that it seems like management might be willing to
start up talks again-----they are taking other action
which sends a mixed signal to the strikers---like
placing job advertisements in the Buffalo newspaper
for jobs at the Derby factory.
It is shady things like this that make it crucial that
we keep the pressure up! The more university contract
suspensions and general scrutiny on New Era management
by schools, students, media, etc---the more pressure
on New Era to bargain in good faith and settle the
strike.
Even though the weather is crazy in Buffalo and Derby,
the picket line remains strong and morale is super
high. Student involvement is helping
morale---strikers really enjoyed participating in the
interviews and hearing about student actions and
plans.
(Students on campuses all over will be sending a
letter a day with a different New Era worker-student
interview to their administrators, with whatever
version of the USAS's "unified demands" for this
campaign that work on their campus).---if you want to
do this action at your school, email me!
Peace,
Mary Beth
