Subject: Calls Needed Today: New Threat to Estate Tax
From: United for a Fair Economy Action Team
To:
Dear Friends of United for a Fair Economy and Responsible Wealth,
Please contact your Senators immediately to urge them to oppose Senator Jon Kyl’s proposed amendment to permanently repeal the estate tax. A vote may be held as early as tomorrow (Tuesday, February 5), so please call TODAY. Congressional switchboard: 202-224-3121.
Background
As you are probably aware by now, the Administration and the Republican-controlled House have been using the 9/11 tragedy, the war, and the current recession as cover to pass numerous unrelated pieces of legislation that they have been unable to pass previously.
Last week, Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) proposed an amendment to the economic stimulus bill that would make repeal of the estate tax permanent. This amendment would do nothing to stimulate the economy, and would not even take effect until 2011.
As part of the overall Bush tax cuts enacted last summer, the estate tax is being phased out over a ten-year period, ending in 2010. However, because of cost considerations, the entire tax cut law sunsets in 2011. That means that the estate tax, which will be repealed for one year in 2010, will be reinstated in 2011. Kyl and other opponents of the estate tax have vowed to make the repeal of the estate tax permanent. This is likely to be their first shot across the bow, and must be taken seriously.
The estate tax is a useful and fair tax that helps provide federal and state revenues for needed programs and services. States stand to lose considerable revenue from an estate tax repeal. For example, according to studies, California would lose about $940 million annually, Florida about $780 million and Illinois about $360 million annually.
At this time of national crisis, it is is unconscionable for our leaders to consider any further tax cuts for the wealthy. If anything, now should be a time to postpone or repeal the tax cuts for the wealthy that were passed last year. Please call your Senators now and tell them that you oppose Senator Kyl’s amendment (S 2758) or any amendment that would permanently repeal the estate tax. Congressional Switchboard: 202-224-3121.

Priorities for Estate Tax Calls
The following Democratic Senators are especially important to this vote. These Senators either voted for the Bush tax bill (which included repeal of the estate tax), or voted against an amendment to that tax bill by Byron Dorgan that would have preserved the estate tax.
