Include something about brazil and what is now happening in
argentina? (Thousands of people from around the world gathered in
Brazil to demonstrate that another world is possible. Demonstrators
in Buenos Aires are putting that into practice.)
Listserv announcement
"TACO BELL IS TOXIC HELL
TACO BELL IS TOXIC HELL
In Immokalee they don't pay sh@*
For all the tomatoes they gotta pick
Taco Bell is gettin' rich
The whole damn system makes me sick
The whole damn system makes me sick"
- Radical cheerleaders of the University of Chicago
From Immokalee to Los Angeles, Chicago to Memphis, people across the
nation are ready to send out a shout to Corporate America: "THIS IS
WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!"
We are in the midst of some exciting times. The entire nation is
finally waking up to the problems inherent in a corporatized society
such as ours with the Enron scandal. Consumers are raising their
voices through powerful campaigns, such as PETA's recent campaign
against the fast food industry that has succeeded in pressuring
corporate giants from McDonald's to Tricon Global (the parent company
of Taco Bell) into using their influence over their meat suppliers to
create more humane conditions for farm animals. PCUN has
demonstrated to the world that "SI SE PUEDE", having won dialogue and
contract negotiations for thousands of Oregon farmworkers, after a 10
year boycott of NORPAC products and many more years of struggle.
Tens of thousands of activists from around the world converged in
Brazil for the World Social Forum to show us all that Another World
is Possible…and Argentina is experimenting with the possibilities as
we speak.
And now here we are, only 10 days and counting until the send-off
rally of the Taco Bell Truth Tour! The nation is abuzz with
excitement about the boycott and the tour. Students are organizing
protests from Tallahassee to Ithaca to Madison to San Francisco, with
weekly protests happening in cities from LA to Tucson to Memphis.
The national "Boot the Bell" campaign to kick Taco Bell out of our
universities is gaining momentum, with more universities signing up
every day. A quick search on Google brings up a wide variety of
information on the Taco Bell Boycott, including links to the No Logo
(http://www.nologo.org/) and the Rage Against the Machine
(http://www.ratm.com) websites. New anti-Bell sites are appearing,
including:
Student / Farmworker Alliance: www.sfalliance.org
Chicago Boycott Committee: www.noTacoBellChicago.20m.com
And most exciting of all is the amazing support coming for the Taco
Bell Truth Tour. From the Midwest regional convergence in Chicago on
March 3 to "Rise Up 2002: One Movement From the People For the
People" in LA / Irvine on March 10-11, thousands of people will be
participating. Over 40 organizations around the nation have signed
up to participate in Rise Up 2002, which includes actions at Forever
21 to end sweatshops in the factories of LA and in front of Taco Bell
Global Headquarters to end sweatshops in the fields of Florida.
Don't miss out on this historic moment…check out the CIW website
(www.ciw-online.org) or send an email to tbtruthtour@aol.com to find
out how you can join the Taco Bell Truth Tour and Rise Up 2002.
