ABOUT FLOC...

The Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) was founded in 1967 by
Baldemar Velasquez who worked the fields of Ohio as a child and decided
upon completing college to devote his life to the struggle of his
people. FLOC is based out of Toledo, OH, but we have started organizing
in North Carolina and Florida in response to a call from our last
workers' convention to "organize the South."

Many amazing people have worked with us over the years and we have had
some phenomenal victories. Our achievements have included:
*** Winning first three-way contracts in US labor history between
multinational corporations, their subcontracted farmers, and
farmworkers.
*** Creating a privately agreed-upon labor board called the Dunlop
Commission to handle labor disputes between farmworkers, farmers, and
food companies.
*** Building a union base among a very transient population with 7,000
contract members in Ohio & Michigan and several thousand associate
members in North Carolina, Florida, and Texas
*** Co-founding the National Coalition for Dignity and Amnesty of
Undocumented Workers

FLOC IS NOT JUST ANY UNION...

In addition to farm-worker labor rights, we are committed to:
international worker solidarity, human rights, the environment,
sustainable agriculture, immigrant rights, indigenous cultural dignity,
and strong Black-Latino relations in the US

We have taken important stands...
1) Fighting for labor rights for domestic, migrant, and immigrant
workers, 2) Promoting legislative alternatives to current immigration
policy, 3) Opposing military atrocities in Latin America, 4) Confronting
environmental racism, 5) Speaking out against police brutality of people
of color, and 6) Demanding a new trial for Mumia Abu Jamal

WHAT WILL THE WORK INVOLVE?

After an intensive training process, you will be paired with an
experienced worker-organizer and assigned to about 6 farm labor camps,
which vary in size from 10 workers to several hundred. You will be
FLOC's link to its members and prospective members in these camps.

In Ohio, you will make sure that FLOC workers are treated with respect
and dignity. If there is a problem, the team will decide how to
respond. You will also assist in the process of contract negotiation.

In North Carolina, you will help us build relationships with
non-unionized workers in a severely repressive work environment. You
may also get the opportunity to help organize solidarity protests and
other actions.

WHAT DOES IT PAY?

We cannot pay living wages to all the organizers we need. That is why
we need you! When we are able to provide a living wage, we normally
hire out of our rank and file.

For this reason, your experience is your only guaranteed compensation,
but in the past, we have been able to provide food and lodging and cover
all living expenses for interns that need it. If you need a stipend, we
will work with you to raise the money from your school and special
programs.

You will not be judged by your finances. If you are a dynamite
organizer, we will work hard to make it happen, whatever your needs. If
you are a student, you can apply to special programs at your school.
Some foundations have money, particularly for outstanding Latinos and
other people of color.
