Anti-Sweatshop Activists Continue National Speaking Tour
Educating for Justice's Jim Keady and Leslie Kretzu are undertaking a
nationwide speaking tour to raise awareness about the suffering of Nike
subcontract workers. As you may know, Jim Keady was a soccer coach at St.
Johns University until he spoke out against the university's contracts with
Nike and was fired. Leslie Kretzu, a former track star, recently helped
carry the Olympic torch across the country to Salt Lake City. During her leg
of the tour, she ran barefoot through the icy streets of Philadelphia to
demonstrate her solidarity with Nike workers. In 2000, Jim and Leslie spent
several weeks living in Indonesia on the same amount of money as that paid
to Nike subcontractors. Each lost significant weight during the experience.
To learn more about their inspiring activism, please attend one of the
events listed below.
Speaking Tour
Educating for Justice is completely committed to "being a voice for the
voiceless," for bringing the stories of Nike's oppressed workers to the
world. To this end, Project Director, Jim Keady and Assistant Director,
Leslie Kretzu, have embarked on a National Speaking Tour of U.S. Colleges,
Universities, High Schools and Community Groups. If you would like to book
the Educating for Justice for a speaking engagement, please contact us at

MID-WEST AND WEST COAST TOURS – MAJOR SUCCESS
In the months of January and February, EFJ Directors Leslie Kretzu and Jim
Keady addressed huge crowds of students and faculty at high schools and
universities in the mid-west and on the west coast. With audiences over 400
at some events, it is a positive sign that interest in social justice issues
is growing and that this current momentum must be focused towards concrete
positive changes for Nike’s workers.
Leslie and Jim would like to thank all of the campus organizers that worked
so hard to make each event a major success. Without your help, EFJ would
not be able to reach so many people and continue to educate, empower and
invite people to take action to end Nike’s exploitative labor
practices.
We would also like to thank RATMıs Tom Morello for his gracious introduction
at the University of Southern California and Jake Sexton, RATMıs political
advisor for making the necessary arrangements.
Leslie and Jim are looking forward to upcoming campus visits in March and
April and invite all of our campaign supporters to come out for these
events.
