Hey all! I don't know how many of you are any where near Wheeling
West Virginia, but we'd sure be happy to have you come and visit this
SATURDAY, MARCH 16TH. We'll be presenting a day of teach-in's on
Social Justice issues here on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit
University that's sure to be fun and enlightening!
What's that you say? I've got better things to do on a Saturday than
learninig about Social Justice stuff at some quaint little school
tucked into the rolling hills of wild and wonderful West Virginia?
Well, think again, 'cause this is going to ROCK YOUR SOCKS OFF!
Here's our schedule for the day:
10:45am - Introductions from the clubs that are helping to put it on:
Justice and Peace in Our Times, the Black Student Union, and the
Martial Arts Club.
11am - Kevin Pranis (of the Prison Moratorium Project) will lead a
discussion about ORGANIZING.
12noon - A discussion on INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY lead by the
Brouderhauf (members of an Anabaptist community near Uniontown
Pennsylvania) as well as students from Wheeling Jesuit's own Mother
Jones House (a residence house of students that was created to serve
the poorest section of Wheeling) Don't know what intentional
community is? Come and find out.
1pm - Fr. O'Brien will host a discussion on INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM on
our campus which will feature stories of students who have been
harassed in recent months due to their beliefs.
2pm - Andrea Calver of HERE (Hotel & Restaurant Employees Union) will
lead a discussion titled, "Do UNIONS Bring Justice?" Andrea will be
especially concerned about the plight of service workers and HERE's
campaign for Card Check Neutrality.
3-5pm - Dr. Ron Molholland (Director of the Youth Detention Center in
Wheeling) and Kevin Pranis (of the Prison Moratorium Project) will
host a discussion on the PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX.
Plus, all day long SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING will be offered (no black
soled shoes please) and some NURISHMENT will be available.
All the day events will take place in the Erickson Alumni Center of
the McDonough Building - except for the martial arts, which will take
place in the gym of that same building.
Afterwards please join us for a ROCK CONCERT in the campus bar, the
Ratt. Featured bands will include Dollar Shots, Mikey Iafrate (of
the Minus Tide), and Andy Chrest.
Directions for the school are simple:
Interstate 70 to the Washington Ave. exit in Wheeling. Head north on
Washington Ave. and take a left at the big brick and glass NASA
building with the little booth out front. The address is 316
Washington Ave and it is very close to the highway. If you pass the
Convenient food mart you've gone too far.
For further questions please call Nick Giacobbe at (304)243-2880 or
Emilie Schierloh at (304)243-4625.
*Emergency housing may be available
Solidarity!
