Students and Workers Demand "Workers' Rights and Economic Justice" on April 4th National Week of Action
Over 100 campuses and communities honor Dr. King's legacy with student - worker solidarity for economic justice
WHO: Student, labor, community, immigrant rights and faith-based organizations
WHAT: National Student-Labor Day of Action; local events and actions in support of local, national and international workers' rights and economic justice issues. The national co-sponsors are the United States Student Association, Jobs with Justice, United Students Against Sweatshops, and the Prison Moratorium Project.
WHEN: On and around Thursday, April 4, 2002
WHERE: Over 100 local actions nationwide (Highlighted Events follow)
Over the past few years, students across the country have been building a powerful movement against corporate greed. Whether supporting worker organizing on their campuses and in their communities, fighting for living wages, or standing up against corporate bailouts and increasing layoffs, immigrant rights and an end to sweatshops, students everywhere are organizing for social and economic justice.
"We demand that the people who work to maintain our schools and communities be treated with dignity," said USSA President Julia Beaty. "Students are not only the product of the university; we are also its consumers. We should have a say in how our university is run."
April 4th, 2002, will mark the 34th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as the third annual National Student Labor Day of Action. Events will differ depending on the local campaign, for example: at Stanford University on April 7th over 800 students, workers, union members, faculty, and supporters from the Bay Area in will protest Stanford President John Hennessey's refusal to meet with students and workers to discuss the implementation of a Workers' Rights Code of Conduct.
At Pittsburgh University, students and the Pittsburgh Jobs with Justice affiliate, the Alliance for Progressive Action will hold a "Justice for Pitt Workers" rally on April 4th, as a part of their campaign demanding a living wage for all campus workers. Students in Solidarity will also join the U. of Pitt's Black Action Society in co-hosting a viewing of the documentary "At the River I Stand" as a lead-up to the April 4 rally.
Highlighted Actions
Stanford U., Palo Alto, CA: April 7th rally to protest Stanford President John Hennessey's refusal to meet with students and workers to discuss the implementation of a code of conduct. Over 800 students, workers, union members, faculty, and supporters from the Bay Area will stage the action during Stanford's "Community Day." Washington, DC: The Washington DC Student Labor Action Project will join with the Teamsters, the Metropolitan Washington Labor Council, DC Jobs with Justice, and DC high school students to demand better funding for and maintenance of DC public schools. Students from Georgetown U., George Washington U., and American U. will join high school students and workers at the "School Without Walls," to protest privatization and under funding that have led to severe deterioration of the learning environment for students throughout the city. Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA: The Morehouse Student Labor Alliance(MSLA) will join workers in a rally to raise awareness among students and to demand a living wage for campus workers. Louisville, KY: Civil rights movement leader Rev. James Orange will speak on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's activism during the 1968 Memphis Sanitation strike to a group of student, union, community, and faith-based activist. Michigan State U., Lansing, MI: Students for Economic Justice at Michigan State U., an affiliate of United Students Against Sweatshops, will do a Week of Action culminating in a campus-wide rally on April 5th to call on the university to cut its contract with the New Era Cap Company. Workers at a New Era have been on strike for seven months to protest dangerous working conditions. New Era makes baseball caps for colleges and universities, including MSU. Duke U., Durham, NC: On April 4th the Progressive Alliance and the Asian Students Association will sponsor a march through campus to demand that University President Nan Keohane end outsourcing. Case Western Resrve U., Cleveland, OH: Students will boycott a food service establishment on campus and hold a "teach in" on the working conditions and wages for food service workers at Case Western Reserve U. Cafeteria workers with CWRU have been fighting for recognition of their union (HERE Local 10) from the university for nearly a year. Philadelphia, PA: Philadelphia JwJ and students from around the region are planning April 4th actions at 5 area campuses (Temple U., U. Penn, Community College of Philadelphia, Swarthmore College, and Villanova University). Some examples of actions include: at U. Penn, there will be a rally to support graduate students fighting for recognition of their union (AFT). At CCP, there will be a forum on funding for public education At Swarthmore, students will have a rally to demand a living wage for campus workers. U. of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA: U. Pittsburgh Students in Solidarity, Carnegie Mellon People for Workers' Rights, SEIU, and the Pittsburgh Alliance for Progressive Action (a Jobs with Justice affiliate) are planning a "Justice for Pitt Workers" rally on April 4, demanding a living wage for all campus workers. Providence, RI: RI JwJ and students from 5 area universities (Providence College, U. Rhode Island, Brown U., Rhode Island College, and Johnson and Wales College) will join janitors from Providence College and their union, SEIU local 134 in demanding a fair contract. Janitors at P.C. make less than a living wage and are demanding affordable health care, a living wage, and the reinstatement of 9 janitors who were laid-off recently.
