College kids rally for campus workers
Students on more than 100 college campuses nationwide will participate in a National Student-Labor Day of Action beginning Thursday, the 34th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. Among actions: In Atlanta, the Morehouse (College) Student Labor Alliance will rally to raise awareness and demand a living wage for campus workers. In Lansing, Mich., Students for Economic Justice at Michigan State University, will rally Friday to call on the university to cut its contract with the New Era Cap Co., maker of campus baseball caps, where worekrs have been on strike f or seven months. Students at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland will boycott a campus food-service establishment and hold a "teach-in" to support cafeteria workers who have been fighting for recognition of their union. "Students are not only the product of the university; we are also its consumers. We should have a say in how our university is run," says Julia Beatty, president of the United States Student Association.
