Hey everyone,

As far as I know, "free speech zones" are a creation of the Cold War. When
schools were unable to ban communist speakers outright, they would banish them
(along with all other people exercising their freedom of speech) to obscure parts of
campus. I don't know how this was ever construed as constitutional... but I don't
know much about the subject, and the origin may be something different. Hopefully
someone with a better sense of history out there can tell us.
