EMERGENCY ALERT 4/10/02!!!
IMMIGRANT’S CAN’T GO HUNGRY!
We have two hours before the final version of the farm bill is discussed.
Immigrant community under attack!
Call California’s Senators Immediately
Barbara Boxer (202) 224-3553
Diane Feinstein (202)224-3841
MESSAGE:
My name is ______________. I am calling from _________________. I am calling
to urge the Senator to protect IMMIGRANT children and families as part of the
Farm Bill. Ensure that Lawful permanent residents (LPRs) with credit for 16
quarters of work history in the U.S. are allowed eligibility for food stamps.
We also need to eliminate the date restriction limiting the eligibility of
qualified immigrant children. Under the Senate Farm Bill, they would be
exempt regardless of their date of entry. Ensure that any final negotiation
protects children and families.
Background:
Currently, LPRs must have 40 quarters of work history to qualify.
Immigrants can claim credit for a spouse's work, or for work performed by a
parent while the immigrant was under 18 years old (including periods before
birth). This would mean Reducing from 40 to 16 the number of qualifying
quarters that a lawful permanent resident must work to be exempt from
restrictions on immigrants' food stamp eligibility.
Under current law, qualified immigrant children are exempt from
immigrant restrictions only if they were lawfully residing in the U.S. on
Aug. 22, 1996. Qualified immigrant children would be allowed eligibility,
regardless of when they entered the U.S. Currently, only children who were
lawfully present in the U.S. on Aug. 22, 1996, are eligible.
Because the version of the Farm Bill passed by the House of Representatives
(H.R. 4626) does not include restorations of benefits to immigrants, it is
crucial that the Senate bill retain these provisions.
