United Students Against Sweatshops is currently hiring for 2 full-time positions at our national office in Washington, DC. Each position requires a one to two year commitment, a commitment to social and economic justice and a willingness to often work long hours and weekends but with fulfilling results. USAS is a national student-run organization with chapters across the country running exciting grassroots campaigns focused on issues of worker rights and social and economic justice from our campuses and communities to the factories across the world manufacturing garments and other products for U.S. corporations and universities. The staff in our small national office work closely with students nationwide to support ongoing campus organizing; coordinate the activities of local organizations into national actions and campaigns; put together national meetings, trainings, and conferences; maintain communication and coordination with national and international allies; and facilitate the infrastructural development of a dynamic movement.

2 positions: Fundraising & Communications Coordinator and Field Organizer.

1. The Fundraising & Communications Coordinator will work with USAS students to develop, maintain, and coordinate the organization's fundraising and communications networks as well as manage USAS' finances on day-to-day basis. This staff person will be the ultimate point-person to raise funds for the organization's general budget and projects, to handle USAS bookkeeping, to maintain database, and other means of internal communication and to coordinate external communication both with media and allied organizations.

*Responsibilities*

·Working with USAS students to develop an annual fundraising & finance plan and monitoring that plan to ensure fiscal responsibility within the organization

·Preparing quarterly fiscal reports on fundraising & finance matters for students, donors, and USAS' fiscal sponsor

·Writing grant proposals and soliciting donations to fulfill the general budget; overseeing and working in coordination with students and other staff to set fundraising plans for specific programmatic needs and projects

-Maintaining present contacts with funders and building new relationships with potential funders.

·Vision-setting with students to create a long-term finance plan which will develop sustainable alternative sources of funding (from sources such as USAS alumni, professors; labor; wealthy progressive community and concerned citizens)

·Handling USAS bookkeeping, payroll, and insurance matters and keeping regular contact with USAS' fiscal sponsor

·Overseeing the development and updates of the USAS website and general e-mail listservs.

·Coordinating general communication strategies within and outside of the organization-i.e. conference calls among various USAS working groups and committees; responding to student queries by listserv, individual e-mail, phone, or mailing; working with the appropriate students on developing USAS’s organizational newsletter and other mechanisms of communication within the organization.

·Assisting students with media relations-i.e. passing media queries on appropriately, drafting or finalizing press releases as needed, developing media strategies around campaigns or programs, etc.

·Assisting students and other staff in the planning of national meetings, conferences, and retreats.

·Overseeing office and organizational maintenance - checking in with relevant student committees; writing regular work plans, program reports, and self-evaluations; answering phones; updating files, etc.

*Qualifications*

Must have fundraising experience for progressive organizations and strong skills for communicating with students. Knowledge of progressive foundations and the labor movement is a plus as is experience working with media. Bookkeeping and database skills required. Experience working under a 'board-of-directors' system is a major plus as staff base their day-to-day activities off of self-created work plans guided by student decision-making yet met by self-motivation. Previous office management and/or self-directed work experience, as well as web skills, also preferred.

 

2. The Field Organizer will work with USAS students to (1) network and coordinate both national USAS campaigns and those of local USAS groups and (2) focus on building strong local organizations in our network as well as skilled and committed youth organizers and political leadership within the organization.

*Responsibilities*

-Working with local USAS affiliate campuses, through regular check-in phone calls and campus visits to develop winning campaigns and encourage solid campus organizing models that value:

   ·changing the power dynamics on campus and within our movement

   ·focusing on the development of new student leaders, especially women, students of color, working class and LGBTQ students

   ·prioritizing coalition-building with and showing solidarity for social and economic justice organizations at a local level.

-Creating a field work organizational plan each semester which targets schools-whether for staff attention, for resources, and for leadership development, in order to prioritize and organize field work from the semester outset

-Developing and distributing campaign manuals, skills training materials, brochures, educational literature, and other resources for students.

-Networking between member campuses and between USAS groups and other allied organizations within and outside of the anti-sweatshop and student movements.

-Developing, promoting, and leading organizing and leadership trainings on both a national and local level.

- Helping to create and supervise a student internship program to generate a small network of regional organizers who are focused on field organizing within their geographic regions to supplement the work of national staff.

- Assisting students and other staff in the planning of national meetings, conferences, and retreats, as well as facilitating discussion about long-term goals and strategies for the organization.

-Enabling the effective functioning and follow-through of program-related committees and working groups initiated by USAS such as the International Solidarity Committee and the Alliance Building Committee.

-Developing, coordinating, and maintaining international contacts (with students) with an eye toward the possibilities of connecting U.S.-based leverage with supporting worker organizing campaigns.

-Sharing the responsibility of office and organizational maintenance – checking in with student committees,writing regular work plans, answering phones, updating files and materials, etc.

*Qualifications*

Must have grassroots organizing experience within campus, community, or labor organizations and strong skills for communicating with students. Background in successfully planning and carrying out campaign strategies that mobilize people against identified targets (corporate, university, or elected officials) highly desired. Proven experience in building leadership and strong, sustainable grassroots organizations necessary. Experience working under a 'board-of-directors' system is a major plus as staff base their day-to-day activities off of self-created work plans guided by student decision-making yet met by self-motivation. Experience working with economic justice organizations in Latin America or Asia and fluency in a foreign language is a plus. Proficiency with word processing, database, e-mail and presentation software preferred; web-design skills are an added bonus. Previous office management and/or self-directed work experience also preferred.
