Dear Supporters of a Living Wage for Workers!

Following is an update on American University's Living Wage campaign and
suggested text for an e-mail action. We are hoping to rally support from
5,000 individuals from across the nation. We ask that you read the short
update on our campaign (at the end of this e-mail) and then send an e-mail
by 28 April 2002 to two addresses:
1. AU President Ladner at ladner@american.edu and
2. AU Solidarity Committee at solidarity@american.edu (for tracking
purposes and our records).
Thank you for your support. Please pass this message along to other
supportive individuals and group listservs.

SUGGESTED TEXT OF ACTION LETTER:

Dr. Benjamin Ladner
President
American University
Washington, DC
via e-mail: ladner@american.edu
cc: AU Solidarity Committee (solidarity@american.edu)

Dear AU President Ladner:

I am a concerned individual writing to you from CITY, STATE. I have been
updated on the AU Living Wage campaign, as I am active in AFFILIATED GROUP.
I am writing to express my support of your implementing a living wage of
$12.58/hour plus benefits for all full-time direct and contracted workers
and employees on AU's campus.

As I have learned, the Living Wage campaign enjoys broad-based support on
AU's campus. This spring, over 830 students, faculty, staff and workers
signed petitions in support of the living wage and workers' rights on AU
campus. These petitions were presented to you by AU's Solidarity Committee
on Wednesday, 24 April 2002.

I am pleased that you will be meeting with your Board of Trustees on 30
April 2002 to discuss AU's taking this important step in joining leading
universities across the nation in promoting social responsibility on its
own campus, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Cornell
University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Virginia.

I urge you to support the implementation of a living wage in AU Fiscal Year
2004.

Sincerely,

NAME

UPDATE:

American University's Solidarity Committee, a group comprised of
undergraduate and graduate students, is increasing its efforts to achieve a
living wage of $12.58/hour plus full benefits for all direct and contracted
workers on AU's campus in Washington, DC. (For more information about AU,
please visit www.american.edu.)

In Fall 2001, AU President Benjamin Ladner set up a Living Wage Project
Team, comprised of faculty, staff, top-level administrators and students,
to study the concept and feasibility of implementing a living wage for AU's
campus. President Ladner will be meeting with AU's Board of Trustees and
members of the AU Living Wage Project Team on TUESDAY, 30 APRIL to discuss
this issue.

Although AU Solidarity Committee respects the efforts that President Ladner
has made concerning our Living Wage campaign, we are disappointed that this
critical meeting has been set for such an inconvenient time. It will take
place one day following the end of spring semester classes, rendering our
student group unable to officially gather outside the meeting or hold a
rally in support of our campaign and/or in response to decisions made at
the meeting.

We believe that the AU administration may be utilizing tactics to stymie
the support AU Solidarity has achieved for the living wage campaign.
Furthermore, despite tasking the Project Team and AU Solidarity with
producing extensive reports to prompt the inclusion of the living wage in
the Fiscal Year 2003 budget process, President Ladner failed to even
consider this issue during the budgetary process. This means that the AU
administration has put our efforts on hold until the next budget review
process in early 2003.

We urge you to support our efforts. We will continue to provide you with
e-mail updates on our action.
