Hello everyone,
Hope everyone's Spring semester is wrapping up well and that everyone
has exciting summer plans. Before you leave for the summer to take
the Taco Bell Boycott back home (or wherever you will be spending
your summer) there are two important upcoming actions that you can
participate in.
First of all, the Boot the Bell campaign aimed at breaking Aramark's
contract with Taco Bell has really taken off over the past month.
Students at over 25 Aramark universities have already committed to
being involved in the campaign and are currently leading actions.
Most importantly, if Aramark has not broken its contract with Taco
Bell by Fall, students at all 25 universities are committed to making
the Boot the Bell campaign their main focus in the Fall semester.
During an SFA meeting in DC on April 19, students decided that we
should focus our efforts on succesfully booting the bell from one
university so that we can get the ball rolling at other
universities. The university that was chosen is the University of
Chicago (UofC), home to the infamous Chicago Boys as well as some of
the most amazing student organizers in the country. The campaign is
moving forward quickly, gaining tons of momentum from students and
faculty.
NOW THE STUDENTS AT UofC NEED OUR SUPPORT! This is going to be an
incredibly intense month of organizing for the students at UofC and
they need our solidarity. They have requested that letters of
solidarity be sent through Leonore Palladino at
lmpallad@midway.uchicago.edu These letters will be taken along with
other materials in meetings with UofC administration to demonstrate
that not only do students and faculty at UofC support booting the
bell, but that organizations around the country feel strongly that
the UofC should not support sweatshop working conditions. Please
send your letters of support ASAP,
The second action to keep in mind is the May 16 protest in
Louisville, KY in front of Tricon headquarters during the yearly
shareholders' meeting. If you are unable to make it out for the
protest itself, organize a local action (leafletting / call-in / etc)
in solidarity. For more information, check out the CIW website at
