Howdy Y'all!
I have some very super ultra exciting news...we have a
keynote speaker for the Summer Conference and it's
Suzanne Pharr!!!!
For those of you familiar w/ her, you know she's
amazing in every way. For those of you unfamiliar,
read on for a short bio.
SUZANNE PHARR is founder and nineteen-year employee of
the Woman's Project in Arkansas. Suzanne joined the
Highlander staff in 1999. She is an organizer, writer
and strategist focusing on building a multiissued,
multiracial movement for social and economic justice.
Suzanne is the author of Homophobia, A Weapon of
Sexism and In the Time of the Right: Reflections on
Liberation.
She will share the keynote with Paulina Hernandez
Gomez a youth activist from Veracruz, Mexico
PAULINA HERNANDEZ GOMEZ is a youth activist and artist
from Veracruz, Mexico, who joined Highlander staff in
2002. She has worked with the Student Action with
Farmworkers, a program promoting adult education,
English as a Second Language, and Know-Your-Rights
campaigns; addressed worker safety issues and
pesticide trainings for migrant farm workers; and
helped build the HERGOM Agency of North Carolina, a
liaison agency for the Latino community and the
English-speaking community that promotes cultural
diversity, political awareness, adult education, and
English as a Second Language. Paulina has done youth
organizing in immigrant and disenfranchised
communities in rural and working class communities of
North Carolina through the LEVANTE! youth initiative
and was a regional organizer for the Catholic Youth
Organizing project. She was part of the directive
board for Trabajadores del Sureste, a coalition of
grassroots organizations working with the immigrant
Latino community in the southeast part of the U.S. She
is is part of Across Race and Nation and Pueblos de
Latino America and is the lead on The Young and the
Restless program.
