[starcgrassroots] Please Support Democratic/Honest Media and Palestine

The following are three e-mails in chronological order, including a sample
letter to CNN, about a series that the CNN news service is putting out about
the affects of terror on Israelis by Palestinean suicide bombers in response to
Israeli/US pressure. Please write them and ask that cover the affects of
Israeli/US terror on the Palestinean people. They are required to do so both
from a moral and I believe a legal standpoint (according to regulation
requiring equal air time to both sides of an issue).

Today, Saturday, 22 June 2002, CNN announced their upcoming week-long series
called "Victims of Terror", to be aired all next week. The trailer promotes
this program as being one that would cover "..what it must feel like to have
loved ones killed by terrorist attacks." The program will be a series of
interviews with Israeli "victims of terror." On 18 June, Ted Turner, the
billionaire founder of CNN, made a pathetically simple statement:"The
Palestinians are fighting with human suicide bombers, that's all they have. The
Israelis ... they've got one of the most powerful military machines in the
world. The Palestinians have nothing. So who are the terrorists? I would make a
case that both sides are involved in terrorism." (Tuesday June 18, 2002 The
Guardian)

In the few days since he made that statement, CNN has been under vicious attack
by pro-Israeli groups and extremist in the Zionists movement. We believe that
CNN is cowering under this massive verbal aggression and is producing this
program to atone for Ted's sin! However, in our view, such a program already
promises to be extremely biased and one-sided, since CNN did not announce its
intention to produce a parallel program about Palestinian "victims of terror",
nor did they announce that there will even be a Palestinian voice to counter
what the Israelis will say. We urge you to call and write to CNN DEMANDING that
they present a program equal in time and quality, and in the same time-slot,
about the Palestinian victims of Israeli aggression and state terror.

At the very least, and if they must produce that program, then it is their
moral obligation and their duty as a news agency, to have Palestinians respond
immediately after each part of the series. As they interview
Israeli "victims", we demand that they also interview Palestinian victims in
Jenin, Nablus, Gaza, Hebron and all other Palestinian cities that are being
terrorized by the Israeli occupation army. Please do this, if nothing else. We
cannot allow the Zionists and supporters of Israeli war criminals to intimidate
CNN or any other news agency, bringing them to their knees with threats of
boycott or whatever other blackmail tactics! The integrity of all news media
is riding on this. Stop CNN from cowering under Zionist pressure! Honesty and
integrity in reporting the news cannot apply to one side and not the other --
that is called BIAS! MunaThe Palestine Monitor - Media Watch GroupRamallah E-

"There is not one of you who would dare write his honest opinion. The business
of Journalism is now to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to
vilify, fall at the feet of Mammon and sell himself for his daily bread. We are
tools, vessels of rich men behind the scenes, we are jumping jacks. They pull
the strings; we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are the
properties of these men. We are intellectual prostitutes." John Swainton, of
the New York Times at his retirement party in September 2000

From <jonah@riseup.net>

I am deeply upset to learn about your Israeli victims of terror serries. It
seems to me that you are responding to political pressure from Israelis to hide
the truth. I am an American Jew, but am aware of the attrocities that the
Israeli government is committing against the Palestinean people. How dare you
hide the truth for you political/ financial gain. If you are going to run this
series then you have a moral, and I believe a legal imperitive (as a result of
laws requiring equal airtime for issues) to also air the effects on Israeli
terror on the Palestineans.

I look forward to your response.

On behalf of the Palestine Monitor, Media Watch Group, and all the Palestinian
victims of Israeli terror, I thank you for your great letter of protest to
CNN.

They have gone ahead with the program, without a Palestinian voice to balance
the perspective. Therefore, we ask you to please write them again, insisting on
the production of a program that speaks ONLY of Palestinian suffering, and does
not have any Israeli voices responding to the their point of view.

We cannot relent.

Thank you.
