Dear JwJ Fair Trade activists,

Yes, it's true, the Fast Track Bill was voted into conference committee
yesterday, by only one vote! JwJ coalition staff and leaders - we will
be having a conference call about this on July 9 - check your e-mail for
details.

Here's a snippet of what the Financial Times of London had to say about
the vote in today's paper.
"The US administration's efforts to win congressional authority to
negotiate new trade agreements survived yet another near-death
experience yesterday, as the House of Representatives agreed by a single
vote to keep the so-called fast-track bill alive.

By a vote of 216-215, the House sent the bill to a conference with the
Senate that must reconcile the competing versions. The decision holds
open a slim possibility that the trade bill could win final passage
before Congress adjourns for the summer in August. The trade bill has
been among the economic priorities of the administration, which wants to
conclude a new global trade agreement as well as a regional pact with
Latin America and several bilateral trade deals."

What this means for the vote - It could happen in July, it's possible
that it won't happen until after August recess but there's no way of
knowing. The Wall Street Journal reported in today's paper that the vote
will probably happen in early fall. There's a lot of anger and
frustration at Rep. Thomas's rule, and how he decided that he could
speak for the entire House of Representatives. Rep. Rangel made this
statement about the Thomas bill, "I submit to you this is not just an
insult to the members of the Ways and Means Committee. This is not just
an insult to the House Rules and traditions. This is an insult to the
American people."

The 10 Democrats who voted for the Rule and for FT: Mathesson, Hill,
Davis (FL), Synder, John, Carson (OK), Hall (TX), Dooley, Lucas, Tanner,
Stenholm

The 10 democrats who were voted for FT but voted against the Rule:
Bentsen, Suan Davis, Moore, Etheridge, Hinojosa, Ortiz, Skelton, Dicks,
Jefferson, Moran

The time is now to let your Representatives know that you want them to
vote no to Fast Track! Call, write, send postcards, have fun actions,
keep showing Trading Democracy, keep educating people about the bill.
