Sisters and Brothers,
Below is a description of events in Milwaukee around the Travis case and the ongoing struggle for Free Speech around Miller Park. We’re gonna need more defense help as the season continues. Donations to the Travis Fund can be sent to the General Defense Committee with a note that says ‘Travis Fund’. You can also join the GDC by going to the IWW web page. It’s $25 for the year and you get the GDC newsletter, the Defiant Spirit. The August issue includes features on the stadium free speech fights, amongst numerous other important defense fights.

Attached to this email is the leaflet we are using at PNC Park tonight. It’s already outdated – but I think we are doing a pretty good job of putting things together that baseball fans will read. Wish you could see the cartoon but I'm not that computer literate. If anyone has any suggestions about how it can be better (and spare us the grammatical suggestions, don’t tell us about any typos) we would really appreciate it. Another version needs to go to press tomorrow for the Baseball Hall of Fame actions. We’re running late, but we are running with the baseball season.
By the way, it occurred to us yesterday that the Blue Jays and the Cardinals are also birds. The IWW cat is getting hungry for some sweatshop justice.
For the One Big Union, Kenneth
From Jenny -
Yesterday, Travis Beaman had his intake hearing regarding the trumped up charges he was facing from our action at Miller Park, July 9, 2002 All-Star Game. His lawyer, Catalina Stark, was able to get the criminal charge dropped ("Resisting or Obstructing an Officer") and reduced to a ticket. The ticket is similar to a parking ticket and will not remain on his record
once paid. The bad news - the ticket is a hefty $425. Travis paid a $125 retainer fee for the lawyer and now needs to pay $425.00 for the ticket, a total of $550. A few of us Milwaukee Wobs, Jenny ($125), Gerry ($100), and Ken ($280) gave Travis money out of our own pockets in order to cover immediate costs. We believe the IWW GDCs should pay for this and would appreciate your monetary support. I am a member of the Madison GDC and have asked them for support as well.
Regarding the "Expressive Activities on Miller Park Grounds" policy we are planning a direct challenge as well as some paper communication with "The Club" a.k.a. The Milwaukee Brewers. I've received the lease, memorandum or understanding, and "ownership" documents pertaining to Miller Park. Of course the lease doesn't maintain absolute ownership as Mr. Ethier, spokesperson for "The Club" maintains. These documents do claim though, in more words than necessary, "We make money the old fashioned way. We steal it!"
Talk soon,
Jenny Peshut
PS: You are spelling my name incorrectly in my email. My name is "Peshut." No "c." It is a Croation name. My dad was second generation (my grandparents came over with all the other imigrants at the time) and was a Teamster truck driver and mechanic. The "c" would imply it is German. Not a good mistake to make if you know the Nazi/Croatian history.
