Dear JwJ activists,
First of all, congratulations for doing incredible work to fight Fast
Track. The way it was passed is a testement to how unfair and
undemocratic (and slimy!)the legislation is. Thank you everybody for
all your hard work, creative actions, the countless phone banks and post
card campaigns. All of the education and awesome organizing that's
happened is great groundwork for the fights ahead.
Here's a report on what happened Friday by Timi Gerson of Public
Citizen: "Many of us who watched the December 6th vote thought that the
GOP couldn't sink any lower -- but we were wrong. This morning, they
went to the Rules committee without a bill text and did not make one
available for the 304 page text until late afternoon. Then, Members were
instructed to print out a copy of the304 page bill from a website.
Starting at 7pm Friday night in the middle of the Homeland Security
debate when the text became available, Members were given less than 5
hours to analyze the legislation that will determine trade policy for
the next 5 years. "
Fast Track passed at 3:30 Saturday morning with a razor thin 215 - 212
margin. Here's the votes in a report from Scott Paul of the AFL-CIO -
"We lost 5 Dems from the December Fast Track vote: Larsen (WA), Smith
(WA), Tauscher (CA), Harman (CA), Ford (TN) but picked up 1 (Ortiz from
Texas) who was wrong last time. Other wrong Dems: Bentsen, Carson
(OK), Davis (CA), Davis (FL), Dicks, Dooley, Etheridge, Hall (TX), Hill,
Hinojosa, Jefferson, John, Lucas (KY), Matheson, Moore, Moran (VA),
Skelton, Snyder, Stenholm, Tanner.
Of the Republicans, Gilman, Putnam, Rogers (KY), Foley and Aderholt
switched from December and were wrong. Republican switching who were
right this time but wrong in December were Jo Ann Davis (VA), Hayes,
Hunter, Rohrabacher, Stearns. Quinn, Hostettler and Young (AK)...all
absent last time...voted right. Wilson (SC), a new Republican, voted
right. Other Republicans voting right were Bartlett, Capito, Coble,
Duncan, Graham, Hoekstra, Jones (NC), LaTourette, LoBiondo, McHugh,
Norwood, Paul, Regula, Simmons, Smith (NJ), Taylor (NC), Walsh, Weldon
(PA)."
