INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Asian & Pacific American Community Program Intern

Compensation: 2/5 FTE (14 hours/week) $13.95/hour
Start date: Position available immediately.
The work of the American Friends Service Committee to promote peace,
social
justice and humanitarian service, is rooted in the experience and faith of
the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). While AFSC staff and
volunteers
are not required to belong to any particular denomination or faith, they
are
expected to understand and support the Quaker foundations of the work of
AFSC. These guiding principles are based on the belief in that of God in
every person, and the right of each person to reach his or her full
potential.
Program Description:
The AFSC has programs in nine regions of the United States and many parts
of
the world including Laos, Cambodia, Korea and Vietnam, working on a broad
range of peace and justice issues with diverse constituencies. AFSC
programs
seek to root out those causes of injustice and violence in our society
which
lie in poverty and imbalance of wealth, and in the exclusion and denial of
recognition and rights based on such factors as race, gender, class,
religion, nationality, legal status, and sexual orientation. As a
national
and inter-national organization we attempt to integrate local struggles
with
struggles in many parts of the world.
The AFSC Asian & Pacific American Community Program is designed to
catalyze
existing youth work in Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities in the
Bay Area including San Francisco and the East Bay. The APAC program seeks
to
support the youth movement for justice and social change. The program has
worked closely with API youth organizations to coordinate the API Youth
Institute and provide workshops on various community issues.
The Youth Committee is a diverse group of high school and college-aged
youth
who are concerned with the intersection of youth issues and social
justice.
The Youth Committee provides a forum for youth of different ages and
backgrounds to find commonality in the struggles they face and to explore
various tools for responding to and organizing around their experience.
Their first project was the production of a `zine called "Speak Out."
Future
projects may include more issues of "Speak Out" or a multicultural youth
institute. The Youth Committee plays a role representing youth concerns
to
the American Friends Service Committee. Committee members may also have
the
opportunity to participate in national or international gatherings.
Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate the Youth Committee
