USASers,
We are writing to invite you and your school to be a part of Educating for
Justice's 2002-2003 National Speaking Tour. EFJ is a non-profit education
and advocacy organization that is focused on raising awareness about social
justice issues among mainstream college and high school students.
Along with returning from a month-long research trip in Indonesia, EFJ
Directors, James Keady and Leslie Kretzu, were most recently plenary speakers
at the Collegues in Jesuit Business Education conference at St. Joseph's
University and earlier this summer they presented at the International
Association of Jesuit Business Schools' conference in Taipei, Taiwan. In the
past two years Keady and Kretzu have done presentations at over 120 schools
across the country.
Currently EFJ's work is focused on a multi-level campaign to improve
conditions for the 130,000 workers in Indonesia who are producing footwear
and apparel for the Nike Corporation.
A brief description of our speaking event program is below. If you are
interested in helping organize this event and need more information (fees,
available dates, etc) and/or would like to book a date, please write us back
at this email address or call us at 732.988.7322.
We hope this finds you well and we look forward to hearing back from you.
Peace,
Jim Keady and Leslie Kretzu

The Human Side of Globalization:
Nike in Indonesia - A Case Study
In their one-hour and thirty minute interactive multi-media presentation,
including slide shows, music, role-playing, and powerful new video footage,
followed by a thirty minute question and answer period, EFJ Directors, Leslie
Kretzu and Jim Keady attempt to introduce their audience to the human side of
corporate globalization through the example of Nike's operations in
Indonesia.
The presentation details the time Leslie and Jim have spent immersing
themselves in the reality of the poor in Tangerang, Indonesia. In August
2000, they lived for one month in a factory workers' slum on $1.25 a day, a
typical wage paid to Nike's subcontracted workers. Along with the personal
accounts of lived solidarity, the presentation also includes the latest
information on Nike's operations in Indonesia that EFJ has gathered during
research trips to Tangerang in 2001 and 2002.
To date, Leslie and Jim have visited more than 120 universities and high
schools across the country and have spoken to over 20,000 students,
administrators, faculty and community members. They have shared their stories
and encouraged their supporters to learn more about the human impact of
globalization and also to take specific action on behalf of justice for
Nike's 130,000 Indonesian workers.
What are people saying about EFJ's National Speaking Tour?
"Thank you for taking the time to come to Milwaukee. It was truly a life
altering experience."
Barbara L., Marquette University
"I wanted to thank you for the thought provoking presentations you gave on
Thursday. I know that many of our students will never be the same. I have
had a number of students and teachers coming up to me telling me how much you
challenged them. In fact, the Assistant Headmaster, who was only able to
attend for part of the evening session, felt that for some students this
could be a pivotal, eye-opening event."
Chris Barnitt, Seton Hall Prep
"I've been here for more than three months, attending every presentation I
have time for, and yours was far and beyond the best. It was very
well-organized and really informative, but most importantly, you totally
struck a personal chord with everyone in that room."
Kat Melville, Swarthmore College
"I am in awe of your courage and unfailing dedication. If you ever feel
overwhelmed or discouraged, at least know that you have touched and changed
the lives of students all over the country, one of the most profoundly
affected being myself."
Joi, The College of New Jersey
"I have been involved with Amnesty International and have attended a rally
against Nike and Disney sweatshops several years ago, so this was not new to
me. However, as 'knowledgeable' as I thought I was, the stories about
sweatshop worker's lives in Tangerang, Indonesia was heartbreaking. I am a
senior in high school who is willing to give up any summer plans that I had
in order to give something back to the world."
Jeanine Dargis, Academy of Holy Angels
"After I heard you speak, I joined Indiana University's No Sweat group. I
just wanted to say thanks for coming to speak. It amazes me how drastically
that one night has changed my life"
Doug B., Indiana University
"I just want to say that Jim and Leslie did a phenomenal job in presenting
all of these horrible truths that are an unfortunate reality for the factory
workers in Indonesia. They have really opened my eyes to this issue. I had
heard about sweatshops before, but I honestly never delved into the issue.
To me they represented a lame joke on Jay Leno. Now, after having had faces
and names placed to these heart-wrenching stories, I am going to do whatever
I can to help."
Charles R., St. Olaf College
"Once again, thank you! Your presentation at John Carroll University last
week was unbelievable! I have been to many a talk and presentation on
justice issues and this was one of the best--truly very professional,
organized and touching. Thanks again--you were so inspiring."
Pat K., John Carroll University
