OIL, GAS & COAL
Women's Protests Spread Through Niger Delta

Last month, women in Escravos, a community on Nigeria's Niger Delta made
international headlines when they shut down the ChevronTexaco's main
Delta facility. The oil installation, which exports 400,000 barrels of
crude oil daily, was brought to a standstill and hundreds of workers
were trapped inside. At least six ChevronTexaco installations in the
Niger Delta have suffered closure by local women demanding social
services in their communities. The have women won their initial demands
for basic services. But tough issues, like compensation for past
environmental damage resulting from oil pollution, still remain to be
hammered out. Sam Olukoya reports from the Niger Delta in this CorpWatch
exclusive.
