Forward Widely (Esp. to People in the Bay Area) !
UC Berkeley is engaging in unfair labor practices, and is refusing to do right by those who make the university work. As a result, clerical workers on this campus - represented by CUE Local 3 - will engage in a historic strike starting on August 26! And adjunct faculty members, who haven't had a contract in years, might also engage in strike action pending a strike vote to be completed soon. On Aug. 21, students, workers, and members of our community will come together for a LABOR SOLIDARITY RALLY ...

LABOR SOLIDARITY RALLY

During more than two years of bargaining with its unions, UC has committed numerous unfair labor practices, including failing to provide information, disparate treatment of union members, unilaterally changing terms of employment, denying access to union representatives, refusing to process grievances, sending negotiators who had no authority to make an agreement and other forms of bad faith bargaining.
The Administration has failed to address even some of the most modest union proposals. UC seems ready to sacrifice the quality of undergraduate education by failing to meet the most basic needs of lecturers and other non-Senate faculty who teach more than half of all undergraduate courses, and the clerical staff who support both faculty and students – those who keep this institution running and give it a reputation for excellence.
While hiding behind the state’s budget crisis and pleading it has no money, UC sits on billions of dollars in unrestricted funds that could be made available to meet the needs of its employees without raising tuition or fees for students by one cent!
Rather than fairly compensate those who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom and their commitment, skill and experience in the administration of the institution, UC has pursued policies and practices in the name of “flexibility” that ‘churn’ the workforce, pushing the most experienced and capable employees out in order to pay new hires lower wages.
Enough is enough!!! It is time to take a stand in defense of quality public higher education and those who deliver it. It is time to teach the administration a lesson about what UC is all about - not empire-building - not managerial prerogatives - not executive perks, privilege and status - not deceptive bookkeeping - but quality public higher education for the people of California.
It is possible that one or more unions' members
may be compelled to conduct a job action or strike this fall.
We ask your support in this struggle.
