Janitors Vote to Authorize Strike

BOSTON (AP) - Boston's janitors union voted Saturday to strike as their
contracts with 30 companies to clean hundreds of Boston-area buildings
expired.

Hundreds of workers packed a church, roaring approval and raising red signs
reading ``Yes!'' when Service Employees International Union Local 254 head
Rocio Saenz asked if they wanted to strike.

The strike did not take effect immediately, and negotiations focusing on
wages and health insurance were continuing Saturday between Local 254, which
represents about 10,000 custodians, and the cleaning companies.

The janitors clean about 1,000 buildings in the Boston area, including about
400 downtown.

The soonest any workers would walk off the job was Tuesday, said Local 254
spokeswoman Renee Asher. She said any strike would not involve a blanket work
stoppage, but would target high profile buildings.

If there is a strike, management and replacement workers would continue to
provide major services such as trash removal and bathroom sanitation, said
James B. Canavan, spokesman for The Maintenance Contractors of New England,
which represents the cleaning companies.

The contractor said its four-year offer includes raises, increased pension
and individual health insurance for full-time workers.

The janitors' union contends the insurance proposal would only benefit about
a quarter of its members, since 75 percent work part time.

The contractors' proposal would raise wages from $9.95 an hour for part-time
workers and $10.20 for full-time workers in Boston's central business
district to $12.20 for both. The union said that translates to about $49 a
day for the average worker, who works 3 1/2 to 4 hours a day.
