SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 @ 1PM in AUSTIN, TEXAS -
EAT RIGHTS PROJECT FEATURES ERIC SCHLOSSER
This e-mail contains:
1) information on what the Eat Rights Project is and conditions of
slaughterhouses
2) meeting in Austin, Texas with Eric Schlosser 9/28 (travel on us!)
3) if you can't go to the meeting and want to know more
1) The Eat Rights Project is a campaign that focuses on the sweatshop
conditions of the meatpacking industry. The industry is mostly made up of
low-wage, immigrant and minority workers who are very likely to suffer
debilitating injuries on the job, mainly due to the line speed. More than
50% of the slaughterhouse workers contacted by the Eat Rights Project report
serious and long term injuries on the job. US government studies have found
bacteria indicating fecal contamination on 99% of poultry and 79% of ground
beef. Unnecessarily high slaughterhouse line speeds are a major factor in
excessive worker injury rates and rates of fecal contamination of chicken and
ground beef. The US government has failed to protect domestic consumers and
workers from the slaughterhouse industry's malpractice. In the face of the
powerful beef and poultry lobby, the federal government will not make the
necessary changes. The institutions that sell and serve Pilgrim's Pride and
Tyson Food products are most responsible for the safety of the product and
for the conditions under which the meat is produced. These large
organizations are in the best positions to force changes. These changes will
save workers and their families. These changes will produce safer, cleaner
meat and protect consumers.
2) Some of you might have had a chance to read the Nation's recent Eric
Schlosser article about the slaughterhouse industry.

The Eat Rights Project is expanding their campaign to college campuses this
fall. We've had some success with this at UT-Austin last spring. We're
having a conference with guest speaker Eric Schlosser on Saturday, September
2 starting at 1 PM. We'd love to have students from all over the country
attend. We're offering hotel, gas money/transportation for students wanting
to attend. So if you haven't already made plans to be in DC for IMF/WB or if
your plans fell through, send me an e-mail and we'll make arrangements for
you to spend some time with us in Austin. Make plans to send reps from your
school, state or region! No matter what the obstacle, if you want to attend
this conference contact us and we'll do everything we can to make it happen!
3) If you can't make it to the meeting and you'd like to get involved or get
more information please contact us and we'll mail you out a packet. You can
also view our documents, including our white paper at www.eatrights.org.
