[slwc] Justice for Janitors Boston Strike Update

From: benjamin_mckean (ben@usasnet.org)
Date: Wed Sep 11 2002 - 23:22:59 EDT

hey folks,

Please check out the following update from the students and workers
in Boston. 10,000 janitors there are working jobs for low wages and
no health insurance -- and now, are working without a contract, so
they are about to strike. Students from Boston are beginning to put
themselves on the line, and there's a lot that students across the
country can do to help; these contractors like UNICCO and these
building owners like Boston Properties are across the country, and
they're going to need to feel the heat everywhere before janitors can
win a solid victory in Boston.

If you're interested in organizing an action or a leafleting for
Justice for Janitors in your area, please let me know.

thanks very much,
ben

Justice for Janitors : Strike Bulletin #6

Welcome to the Justice for Janitors Strike Bulletin. If you're
receiving this message as a forward and would like to join our list,
visit www.massjwj.net and sign the online Solidarity Pledge. Even if
you're on our email list, please, visit our website and sign our
online pledge which has already been signed by200 people.
After having spent a week in extended contract negotiations, the
janitors union, SEIU Local 615, BROKE OFF NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE
BUILDING CONTRACTORS for a second time. The union walked out of
negotiations, rejecting the contractors' final proposal of an measly
increase to $12.50 over a period of four years, no health benefits
and no increases in full-time work opportunities, which two items
comprise the centerpiece of the union demands.
As a strike looms, the cleaning contractors remain intransigent. Jim
Canavan, negotiator for UNICCO and primary negotiator for the
cleaning companies, spoke about the janitors' demands for health care
and full-time work as if they were ludicrous. However, yesterday, the
second to last major building owner in Boston, Fleet Bank, issued a
statement in support of the workers. BostonProperties, owner of the
Prudential and the Long Wharf Marriot, stands alone as the only major
Boston building owner which hasn't issued a statement in support of
the workers. The corporation will the final target in actions this
week: including a STUDENT CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE ACTION at the Prudential
Mall, Thursday, September 12th at 5pm, a janitors delegation to the
Prudential at 3pm Thursday, and leafleting the Long Wharf Marriot
this Sunday at 10am. Other building owners who've issued statements
in support of the janitors include Fleet, Equity and State Street
Bank.
As the community and students mobilize for three major actions
tomorrow, the union prepares for a strike. They vow to continue to
push for decent wages(most janitors currently earn about $39/night),
affordable family healthcare(most janitors have no health care) and
full-time job opportunities (75% of jobs are currently part time).
Join us tomorrow for a series of three actions that should send the
janitors well on their way to winning this struggle, certain to be
the largest labor struggle Boston has seen in years. At NOON, we'll
be on the streets by 185 Franklin St, Post Office Square, with IBEW
2222as they announce their support for the janitors. At 3PM, join
SEIU 615 janitors at the SEIU office on 11 Beacon St. in Boston to go
on a delegation to BostonProperties. And at 5PM join the students
from Boston SLAP at the Prudential Mall to tell Boston Properties
it's time to issue a statement in support of the janitors!

SEIU Local 615 now prepares for a strike, which could begin as early
as tomorrow. But tonight, the union will step outside during their
shifts to light a candle in remembrance of brothers and sisters lost
on September 11, 2001. Join them in five central locations in Boston
and Cambridge.
