Hey everyone,

This is a brief update from our friends at No Sweat UK and a letter they
received from an Indonesian union. Quite a lot going on in both
countries!

A message from Indonesia

At the end of August No Sweat sent the first instalment (£2,900) from
the £4,000 we have raised so far to the FNPBI.

They write:
"Dear Comrades
On Behalf of the FNPBI and Indonesian workers in general we would like
to thank you for your valuable act in support of the Indonesian workers'
struggle.
Our industrial-based organisation is very exited by the concrete action
taken by your organisation.
To help our struggle, we have published details of your solidarity work
(both fundraising and your recent actions in support of the fight
against Indonesian anti-union legislation) in our publications.
We received the No Sweat fund money in the two weeks before the strike
held on 24 September. It really helped us to organise this strike. Your
money made it possible to publish and distribute a massive number of
leaflets. Thank you and send our regards to all comrades."

There's been a General Strike in Indonesia, recently, with much
involvement from the FNPBI, the union which No Sweat is fundraising for.
Many thousands of workers joined rallies and protests, objecting to new
laws which will make it illegal for workers to hold protests or rallies
during negotiations or disputes with management!
About 6,000 locked out Nike workers joined the protests, objecting to
the recent closure of their factory - Nike is moving production from
their employer to Vietnam and China, where "production is higher, and
wages are lower", according to Nike executives. That's OK, then.

Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world, yet its workers
are notoriously badly treated. Even after the fall of dictator Suharto,
the so-called democratic government is bringing in new laws to restrict
workers' rights. No Sweat recently handed in a protest to the Indonesian
Embassy in London, and we will continue to organise solidarity with the
Indonesian workers.

The FNPBI's report on their strike, and a picture, is on the No Sweat
