hey folks,
United Students Against Sweatshops is sponsoring a national day of
action against Equity Office Properties and UNICCO this Friday,
October 18th, with an additional day of action on Thursday the 24th
if the Boston janitors strike is still on. We are asking as many USAS
affiliates as possible to participate because the situation in Boston
is now beyond crisis proportions, with janitors that earn only
poverty wages now entering their third week on strike without pay.
THE STRIKE
Boston janitors represented by SEIU went on strike on
September 30th after trying to negotiate in good faith with cleaning
companies for months. UNICCO is the primary negotiator for the
cleaning companies, and they have proven themselves to be a serious
obstacle to justice, refusing to even negotiate about the janitors'
core demands of more health insurance and good dull-time jobs. Equity
Properties is a important building owner in Boston and across the
country -- as well as UNICCO's biggest customer; they've supported
UNICCO every step of the way (for more information, see

WHAT JANITORS HAVE WON SO FAR
6 major contractors have settled with the janitors, expanding
the number of full-time jobs and the eligibility for health
insurance. Major buildings have dumped their UNICCO contracts,
including an order from Republican Gov. Swift cutting their contract
in government offices. And thousands of janitors and supporters are
turning out every night for marches through boston's streets.

your support for justice for janitors!
