"National Take Affirmative Action Day" to Increase

Recruitment and Retention of Students of Color! ®

October 30, 2002

"Don't Erase Race! Erase Racism!"®

For a little over a quarter of a century, Affirmative Action has been
a basic building block for programs that corrected past injustice in
higher education as well as created a diverse and excellent student
body. Students have organized across the country to improve the
recruitment and retention of underrepresented students, demanding
more of our universities' Affirmative Action policies.

Then the rug was pulled out from under us. The opponents of equality
and justice orchestrated a careful campaign of bombarding the media
and funding lawsuits to intimidate universities and fool the public.
Deceiving state initiatives were passed to negate our hard earned
gains across the country. With Affirmative Action once again poised
to return to trial before the Supreme Court, it is imperative that
under-represented students frame the debate over Affirmative Action.

Today legal attacks on affirmative action programs for
underrepresented students are at an all time high. Yet those who
have the most at stake, students of color, have been "erased" from
the lawsuits and the media debate. In several states where
affirmative action has been eliminated, the enrollment of students of
color has not "rebounded" after six years--despite attempts to
replace race with other indicators of "disadvantage." Why? Noticing
race is the only way to ensure racism is not an obstacle in
admissions.

On October 30, 2002 celebrate National Take Affirmative Action Day on
your campus and join thousands of students working nationally to
increase recruitment and retention of underrepresented students by
kicking off your own recruitment and retention campaign. You will
receive a student organizing packet with talking points, factsheets,
media materials, and suggestions for actions. Included also is a
FREE copy of the "Affirmative Action Organizing Manual for Students"
or "The Struggle For Access: Organizing for Student of Color
Recruitment and Retention," a step by step guide to starting your own
campus campaign.

Racial inequity in education is not solved by turning a "color-blind"
eye to the problem. Universities are responsible for taking
affirmative action to ensure equal opportunity for all students, and
students must hold universities accountable for it.

The NAACP Youth & College Division, created in 1936, is one of the
largest organized groups of young people of any secular organization
in the country. Its objectives are to inspire, motivate, and create
interest in civic activities; provide young people with an
understanding of pertinent issues; develop organizational skills for
implementation of community-related activities; and encourage active
participation in these activities.

The United States Student Association (USSA) is the country's oldest
and largest national student organization, representing millions of
students. Founded in 1947, USSA is the recognized voice for students
on Capitol Hill, in the White House, and the Department of
Education. Created as the Recruitment and Retention Project of
People of Color in 1990, the Student of Color Campus Diversity
Project works with students of color activists and our allies to
break down barriers to education and win concrete victories on issues
that effect communities of color in higher education.
