Background: The UC-IMC is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as tools for promoting social and economic justice. The UC-IMC is dedicated to addressing issues that the mainstream media neglects with fair, accurate, and opinioned reporting. We empower everyday people to "become the media" by providing democratic access to available technologies and information.
The UC-IMC Radio Working Group produces a half-hour local public affairs program every week. IMC Radio News is produced by volunteers and broadcast on WEFT 90.1 FM, Urbana-Champaign's community radio station. IMC volunteers also produce features for national radio outlets such as Free Speech Radio News and Making Contact. The Radio News Coordinator provides paid support for these endeavors. The Coordinator helps the group build its volunteer base, refines the show's production process, supports story development, and provides technical support and training.
Qualifications:
- Commitment to democratizing media access
- Strong leadership, organizing and communication skills.
- Ability to delegate and facilitate.
- Can see the big picture and use available resources to fill the gaps.
- Experience in digital production and production training or eagerness to learn.
- Ability to work with volunteer base of diverse abilities, interests, and time commitments.
- Ability to work under deadline.
- Ability to work some evenings and Sunday afternoons.
- Solid familiarity with all kinds of current events and news media.
Preferred but not required: Background in media activism and community radio production; experience working in a cooperative, consensus based environment; and a background in building diverse organizations (race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation).
Responsibilities:
Coordination- Facilitate IMC Radio Production meetings and coordinate all aspects of production, allowing the volunteer producers and reporters more time to focus on refining their material.- Keep track of story development ideas and seek out people to implement them. Broaden the story horizons of the group. Track community events and speakers. Develop and maintain reporting contacts. Develop relationship with local media outlets, WILL, and journalism school.- Refine show production processes. Develop series and in-depth reporting capabilities of Radio News group.- Help refine web archiving process. Document group's work and successes for future grant writing.- Work with various IMC news groups, such as Print and Web, to integrate news coverage.- Be point person for Free Speech Radio News requests. Staff requests and provide support for their production start to finish.- Coordinate and be responsible for a request to renew coordinator grant.- Report to the WEFT Programming Committee as needed as the official
WEFT-IMC liaison. Ensure pledge drive shows are coordinated. Take WEFT airshifter training course.
Outreach and Recruitment
- Coordinate recruitment and outreach to volunteer journalists.
- Plug-in new volunteers to the production process.
Training
- Help train newcomers on media production and reporting.
- Provide technical support for shows as needed.- Evaluate and provide feedback on the show. Elicit volunteer feedback and show process - design feedback system to learn how to retain volunteers.- Hold regular office hours.- Go on paid trip to Grassroots Radio Conference and training sessions as needed.
Hours and Pay: 12 hrs/wk.$10/hr. 48 wks. + training expenses and training. 1 year obligation with possible renewal pending grant funding.
