Today Duke SAS had a great action against Equity Office Properties
at a building they own (University Tower) about 10 minutes from campus.
We had planned to hand out fliers to people going in and out of the
building around lunchtime. Five of us went over and due to a lack of
front desk security, we were able to actually enter the building, go to
different offices and talk to the tenants. We each went to a different
one of the 16 floors, went into the offices, talked to people working
there and handed out fliers, and worked our way down the floors. We got
kicked out of a few offices pretty fast, but because we were all on
different floors and pretty spread out it took them a while to find us
all to get us out of the building. We probably talked to about 75 - 100
people whose work for companies who rent space from Equity in about 30
minutes.
Great conversation with one security guard:
We were waiting outside the building for the last 2 people to get
kicked out and the security guard came out to talk to us.
Him: You guys have to leave the property now.
Us: We can't go until the rest of our group gets here.
Him: You mean there are MORE people in there?!!
Though we doubt that many people who work there will actually call
Equity, they definitely know we were there and didn't like it because
they sent security to find us and kick us out. We also talked to a few
people who seemed concerned about the issue. All in all, a very
successful ation.
