INVITATION TO APPLY FOR
BUILDING POWER PROJECT COORDINATOR,
CENTER FOR ECONOMIC JUSTICE

The Center for Economic Justice seeks a person, qualified for the post of
Coordinator of our Building Power Project, to apply with us for a two-year
fellowship from New Voices. This fellowship, which is granted to a
partnership between an organization and a proposed fellow, would allow the
person to work for two years, with a generous salary and benefits package,
at the Center for Economic Justice. After the two-year fellowship, the
candidate would have the option to remain at CEJ.

The New Voices Fellowship: New Voices, a fellowship of the Academy for
Educational Development, offers a two-year fellowship for a person to work
with a designated organization. The fellowship offers:
- salary (we guess roughly $36,000) and fringe benefits;
- up to $1500/year for professional development;
- up to $6000/year for student loan repayment, or up to $4000/year to cover
other approved expenses;
- leadership training;
- other benefits.

The New Voices Application Process: Applying for this fellowship will be
done in conjunction with CEJ. It is an intensive process, which would be
aided by CEJ staff. As with any grant application process, no compensation
is offered for time invested. For more information, go to
http://newvoices.aed.org.

We feel that we have a strong chance for this fellowship because (1) last
year, we were one of 25 finalists, out of several hundred, for 15 slots;
and (2) this year, New Voices has a special emphasis on international
economic policy.

Building Power Project: In 2003, we will expand our project of garnering
support, visibility, and resources to groups based in both the global North
and South. Our goals are to help community-based struggles at home and
abroad garner power and win concrete change in economic policies. CEJ
staff helps groups get: access to funding, critical information about
policies and projects of the international financial institutions,
international press and publicity, access to key decision-making venues,
and intensive political support for their campaigns.

Job Description: Building Power Project Coordinator: A preliminary
description of the job is as follows: We seek a full-time coordinator to help:
(a) Identify the projects and/or struggles with which we will collaborate
intensively;
(b) Coordinate getting support to the groups. The coordinator may be
involved in: fundraising; research, translation, and information-sharing;
cross-border organizing; publicity; campaigning for policy changes;
skillshares and trainings; and when necessary because our colleagues are
under attack-- human rights defense. We do not expect the coordinator to
do all this work him/herself, but rather primarily to find the networks and
resources to help fill the needs effectively.
(c) Remain in close touch with an advisory committee, other CEJ staff, and
other colleagues in grassroots movements to assure that we are conducting
this project in the most effective, politically sensitive, and accountable
manner.

Building Power Project Coordinator Applicant Qualifications: To apply for
the fellowship, the following are required:
- Consistency with CEJ's mission and goals;
- Knowledge of community struggles, global issues, and/or economics;
- Experience in organizing and networking;
- Experience in working with international groups or movements;
- Good human relations and communications skills;
- Some knowledge of U.S. political/social context;
- Fluency in English; and
- Work authorization in the U.S.

Building Power Project Coordinator Other Considerations:

A caveat for the applicant, established by New Voices, is that he or she
may not be a current or former employee or board member of CEJ.

According to New Voices literature, "applicants are strongly encouraged
from candidates reflecting diverse educational, cultural, and experiential
backgrounds. We encourage applications from women, people with
disabilities, people of diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and
socioeconomic backgrounds, educational and work experiences, geographical
and national origins, sexual orientations, and age."

This is consistent with CEJ's policy as an equal opportunity employer,
which does not discriminate on any of the bases mentioned above. We
strongly encourage people of color, and people from the global South, to
apply for this position.

In addition to the qualifications mentioned above, additional preferred
skills include:
- Fluency in a second language;
- Fundraising skills.

Job Location: Albuquerque, NM or Washington, D.C., based on the preference
of the applicant. It does not matter where you are based now.

Job Timeline:
- November 6: Deadline for applicants to send in application (see "To
apply" section, below)
- November 6-15: interviews with CEJ staff
- November 15: CEJ will select the applicant to jointly apply for the
fellowship
- November December: CEJ and applicant will complete the application
- January 13, 2003: application due to New Voices
- April 16: notification of fellowship awards
- July-August: if award, fellowship begins

Center for Economic Justice: CEJ's mission is to strengthen international
movements that counter corporate-driven globalization and promote just
alternatives. CEJ helps them, in concrete ways, to gain power in their
fights for environmentally healthy, human-centered, and sustainable
economies. Within the U.S., we link the struggles with community groups,
activists, and policy advocates, with the goal of inspiring and
strengthening cooperation. CEJ seeks to foster concrete alternatives and
build popular movements. For more information, go to www.econjustice.net.

To apply: Send a cover letter describing your interest, a resume, and three
references by November 6. Address it to Brenda Anibarro,
Program/Administrative Associate, at banibarro@econjustice.net or c/o CEJ,
144 Harvard Dr. SE, Albuquerque, NM, 87106.
