Urgent News from Santa Monica. . . .

We are getting pounded out here in Santa Monica and urgently need help
from all of our friends around the country, both in the form of donations
and volunteers.

As you all may know, the final vote on Santa Monica's historic Living Wage
Law--Measure JJ-- is on November 5th. The effort to defeat Measure JJ is
now being directed by the national Employment Policies Institute (a project
of the national restaurant association) and the Dolphin Group, the
Republican Party PR firm that designed the Willie Horton ads and has
represented big tobacco, big insurance, big agriculture (and virtually
everything else big and greedy) around the country. The big hotels have
already spent about a half a million dollars on horribly misleading mail
that is being sent out to every voter in the City, every other day. The
mailers have included the following:

*a picture of a closed library saying that, if JJ passes, libraries will
close (they neglected to mention that the City recently passed a generous
library bond and that those closed libraries are currently being rebuilt
into glorious new ones);

*a letter from a board member of the Boys and Girls Club in Santa Monica
saying that if JJ passes, no young people will ever be able to get jobs in
hotels and restaurants (they neglected to provide any back up information to
support this claim);

*a letter from a conservative, Jewish member of the City Council invoking
themes from the history of atrocities and discrimination against Jews to
condemn the alleged discrimination against businesses covered by the
ordinance, vs. those not covered.

That gives you a little taste. The opposition is also doing massive phone
banking from Texas and has people walking door to door throughout the city.

Fortunately, we have a wonderful, exciting campaign to get the ordinance
passed. We have 30 full-time walkers who are almost all hotel and airport
workers on a leave of absence to work on the campaign. We also have a
volunteer phoning and walking operation going 7 days per week. This week
our first piece of mail went out and we have hundreds of volunteers who are
dedicating day and night to winning this campaign.

We have done tracking polls that show us slightly ahead, but we need to
pull out all of the stops to win--for the sake of the thousands of low wage
workers covered by this ordinance and for the sake of our entire national
movement.

Therefore, we are asking you urgently to help us in one of several ways.
Volunteer phonebankers and precinct walkers are needed to get the word out
to the community. We especially need help during the last 5 days before the
election: from Friday, November 1st through Tuesday, November 5th. On
election day, we estimate that we need to have between 200 and 300 walkers
the entire day in order to turn all of the JJ supporters out to vote.

We also need to send out at least one additional piece of mail in order to
win. Unfortunately, this costs more money than we have raised.

Please do whatever you can to help. I know that we are all working hard
on this election on a multitude of really important issues, but please still
consider volunteering some of your time and/or making a donation to help us
win in Santa Monica.

If you think that you can volunteer, please contact Mar Preston at
mpreston@laane.org or call 310-614-4114 to sign up.

Thanks in advance for your help (and to all of you who have already
helped). I encourage you to circulate this e-mail as widely as possible.

Warmest Regards,

Madeline Janis-Aparicio
