Cornell Grad Students Reject Union

.c The Associated Press

ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Cornell University graduate students overwhelmingly
rejected forming a union to bargain collectively with administrators of the
Ivy League school.

The landslide results showed that 1,351 students voted against unionizing
under the umbrella of the United Auto Workers, while only 580 voted for it,
university spokesman David Brand said Friday.

Had students approved the union, it would have become only the second
graduate student union in the country at a private university. In 2000, the
federal National Labor Relations Board ruled that some graduate students at
New York University should be counted as employees, not students, under
federal law.

``The election loss is a disappointment,'' said Joan Moriarty, an organizer
for the union. ``However, this is a national movement and there are going to
be wins and losses.''

Cornell President Hunter Rawlings and university administrators opposed
unionization of the graduate students, but Cornell nevertheless became the
first university in the country to agree to abide by the results of a
unionization election.

Rawlings commended the graduate students for conducting the election with
``vigor and mutual respect.''

The vote was monitored by an NLRB inspector and lawyers for the university
and union.

The NLRB ruling on graduate students is being challenged by administrators at
Tufts, Brown and Columbia universities, who contend the graduate students are
students first and teach as part of course requirements.
