Over $220 million spent in advertising this year alone and Taco Bell
still can't convince young people to "think outside the exploitation"
that exists behind their brand. Armed with a budget of the truth and
creativity, youth all over the country are taking on the Bell and
winning....
The San Francisco Boycott Committee (SFBC) recently took Taco Bell on
in Game 5 of the World Series...the SFBC hit a grand slam off Taco
Bell's lame advertising pitch in the cove outside the Giant's stadium
with a good old fashioned adbusting technique (check out the story on
the CIW website: www.ciw-online.org)
While all those marketing strategists in Taco Bell Headquarters sit
around all day, conspiring against the minds of young people,
students have been busy creating new "Taco Bell-free zones". Last
semester, students at the University of San Francisco convinced their
administration to remove Taco Bell from their campus, the first TB
restaurant to be closed down as a result of the boycott. More
recently, students at Garamoni High School in Indiana succeeded in
removing all Taco Bell products from their cafeteria. So a quick
shout out to Taco Bell...TRUE POWER LIES IN THE HANDS OF THE YOUTH,
not in the pockets of corporate greed.
These two successes are a part of the larger "Boot the Bell"
campaign, with over 25 campuses around the country actively
organizing to Boot Taco Bell from their campus. One of the hottest
campaigns is currently going on at Cal Poly Pomona, where students
convinced administration to postpone the addition of a Taco Bell
franchise on their campus for three weeks, costing Taco Bell
thousands of dollars. Students at Cal Poly are currently mobilizing
to remove the restaurant permanently from their campus.
And this does not even include the grassroots Fair Food Fridays
campaign, with weekly / biweekly protests happening all over the
country, from Memphis to South Bend, IN, Gainesville to Austin.
