My name is Jenny Peshut. I am a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), part of a coalition of human rights, justice, and labor groups working to stop sweatshop abuses in Major League Baseball. Thank you for letting me speak today. As public officials and members of the Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District, I'm sure you know that most people in Southeast Wisconsin and especially the fans who support Brewers baseball are working people. As working people they know the importance of getting a living wage. Our concern is that many of the products sold under the Milwaukee Brewers name and logo may be produced in sweatshops. Sweatshop workers don't get a living wage, enough money to pay at the least for basic needs: housing, food, clothing, medical, education, and vacation time. They often work in dangerous and inhumane conditions. We are here today to ask you to help us stop sweatshop abuses. Our coalition has asked Wendy Selig-Prieb to sign the Sweat-Free Baseball Code of Conduct (hand out Code of Conduct) on behalf of the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club. In it we ask the Brewers to help end sweatshops by refusing to sell merchandise produced under sweatshop conditions: low wages, 10-20 hour days, little or no ventilation, little or no heat, locked work areas, restricted access to toilet facilities, yellow-dog contracts, and basic human rights violations. We are asking you, the members of the Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District to participate. You can help in several ways. 1. Make a public statement against sweatshop merchandise and endorse the principles of the Sweat-Free Baseball Code of Conduct. 2. The Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District will commit to participate in the Anti-sweatshop Advisory Committee along with community members, workers, baseball players, and baseball officials. The Anti-sweatshop Advisory Committee helps end sweatshop abuse by creating ways to comply with the Sweat-Free Baseball Code of Conduct. 3. Make the following amendments to the lease with the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club. Amendment #1 ( The Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club must guarantee compliance with the Sweat-Free Baseball Code of Conduct. Amendment #2 ( Sweatshop merchandise is restricted from being sold at Miller Park. Amendment #3 ( The Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club recognize the Constitutional right to Freedom of Speech. On behalf of the IWW and the coalition for Sweat-Free Baseball, thank you for your time. If you have any questions, we would be happy to answer them today, or feel free to contact us in the future.
